Understanding Perimenopause & Menopause

Perimenopause is the transition period leading up to menopause, often starting in the 40s but sometimes earlier. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate, causing symptoms that can last for several years before menopause officially begins. Menopause is confirmed when a person has gone 12 consecutive months without a period, marking the end of reproductive years.

Common Symptoms of Perimenopause & Menopause

  • Hot flashes and night sweats. This is often felt as sudden warmth and excessive sweating, often disrupting sleep.

  • Irregular periods. This can be changes in your cycle length, flow, or missed periods.

  • Mood changes. Many feel increased anxiety, irritability, or depression due to hormonal shifts.

  • Vaginal dryness. This is from decreased estrogen levels leading to discomfort or painful intercourse.

  • Sleep disturbances. Many experience difficulty falling or staying asleep, often linked to night sweats.

  • Weight changes and metabolism shifts. This is caused by a slower metabolism and changes in body composition.
